Why Your Workout Mat Slides, Bunches or Curls (and How to Stop It)

Mats slide when they are too small and light, have no grip underneath, are brand new, or were stored rolled. Here is how to fix each one for good.

Short answer: a workout mat slides, bunches, or curls for four reasons: it's too small and light to hold the floor, its bottom has no real grip, the surface is brand new and still slick, or it's been rolled up and wants to stay curled. The fix is a heavier, larger mat with a non-slip bottom, a few days of break-in, and letting a new mat flatten before you train on it.

Key takeaways

  • Small, light mats slide. Size and weight hold a mat in place.
  • Grip on the bottom matters as much as grip on top.
  • New mats feel slick for a few sessions; a mild soap wipe speeds break-in.
  • Curled ends flatten in a day or two. Reverse-roll or weigh down the corners.

Why your mat moves, and how to fix it

Problem Usual cause Fix
Slides across the floor Light mat, smooth bottom A heavier mat with a gripping bottom
Bunches up under your feet Thin, narrow mat on a slick or soft floor A wider, heavier mat that lies flat under its own weight
Ends curl up Stored rolled up Reverse-roll it, or weigh down the corners overnight
Your hands or feet slip on top New surface, or sweat Break it in; wipe sweat during breaks
Shifts on plush carpet Soft pad underneath gives way A bigger mat, plus rug anchors under the corners

1. Size and weight hold a mat down

A standard 2' x 6' yoga mat weighs a few pounds and touches very little floor, so one push sends it sliding. A large mat spreads your weight over far more floor and weighs enough to stay put. Our exercise mats run from 14 lbs (6' x 4') to 50 lbs (15' x 6'). The bigger the mat, the steadier it sits.

“Love that it doesn’t slide around on my floor like my other mats.”

2. Grip on the bottom

Most mats put all their grip on top. Ours are non-slip on both sides. The bottom has a circle-pattern grip that holds on hardwood, tile, laminate, vinyl, and low-pile carpet. On thick or plush carpet, a mat can shift slightly during very intense moves; rug anchors under the corners lock it down. More in How to Set Up a Home Gym on Carpet.

3. Break in a new mat

Brand-new mats can feel slightly slippery at first. That's normal and gets better quickly with use. To speed it up, wipe the surface with a small amount of mild dish soap and warm water, or lay the mat out in a high-traffic spot for a few days.

4. Flatten curled ends

Any mat that ships rolled will want to curl at the ends for a little while. Unroll it, flip it, and roll it the opposite way for a few minutes, or lay a couple of dumbbells or books on the corners overnight. Most mats lie flat within a day or two.

“It only took a day to get it to lay perfectly flat (was only curled at one end).”

Still sliding? Check these

  • Dust or water under the mat. Sweep and dry the floor before you lay the mat down.
  • Two mats side by side. The weight and bottom grip usually keep them together; mat seam tape holds the seam tight.
  • A yoga mat in shoes. Soft yoga mats bunch under sneakers. Use an exercise mat built for shoes.

“i tried my TRX exercise with the strongest, most angular force to try to slide the mat and it didn't budge”

FAQ

Why does my yoga mat keep moving on carpet?

A small, light mat floats on top of the carpet pile. A large, heavy mat with a gripping bottom holds far better. On plush carpet, add rug anchors.

How do I stop my mat from curling at the ends?

Reverse-roll it for a few minutes or weigh the corners down overnight. It will lie flat within a day or two.

Why is my new mat slippery?

New surfaces are a little slick. Wipe with mild dish soap and warm water, or use it for a few sessions, and the grip comes in.

Will a bigger mat stay put better?

Yes. A bigger mat is heavier and covers more floor, so it resists sliding. See What Size Exercise Mat Do You Need?
