Short answer: yes, a large exercise mat is one of the best things you can put on hardwood, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), laminate, or tile when you work out. It protects the floor from shoes, sweat, and set-down weights, cushions your joints on a hard surface, and with a gripping bottom it stays put instead of skating around. Sweep the floor before you lay it down, and lift it now and then to clean underneath.

Key takeaways

  • Hard floors are slick under sneakers and unforgiving on joints. A mat fixes both.
  • A non-slip bottom keeps the mat from skating on smooth floors.
  • Grit trapped under any mat is what scuffs floors. Sweep first.
  • Lift the mat occasionally to clean the floor and let both surfaces dry.

Why hard floors need a mat

  • Joints. Jumping and kneeling on hardwood, tile, or vinyl over concrete is hard on knees, wrists, and heels. Our 1/4" (6mm) high-density mat takes the sting out.
  • Grip. Sneakers skid on smooth floors during lateral moves. The mat's non-slip top gives you footing.
  • Floor protection. Shoes scuff, sweat drips, and dumbbells get set down hard. The mat takes it instead of the floor.
  • Noise. Hard floors bounce sound around. A dense mat cuts the thud of jumps and weights.

Floor by floor

Floor What to watch How the mat helps
Hardwood Scuffs from shoes, dents from dropped weights Covers the work area; grips the boards
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and laminate Slick under sneakers; thin planks over concrete feel hard Non-slip footing and cushion on a hard base
Tile Hard on joints; grout lines underfoot One smooth, cushioned surface over the grout
Stick-on vinyl Slippery and loud during cardio Grip on top and bottom, less noise

Our mats are non-slip on both sides. The bottom has a circle-pattern grip that holds on hardwood, tile, laminate, vinyl, concrete, and low-pile carpet.

Setup and care on a nice floor

  1. Sweep or vacuum first. Sand and grit under any mat can scuff a finish when you train on top. Start with a clean, dry floor.
  2. Unroll and let it settle. Lay the mat flat and give curled ends a day to relax.
  3. Clean underneath now and then. Lift or roll the mat back, sweep and wipe the floor, and let both the floor and the mat bottom dry fully before laying it back down.
  4. Wipe the top after workouts. A damp cloth after each session; mild dish soap in warm water for a deeper clean. Full routine: How to Clean a Large Exercise Mat.
