Exercise Mats You Can Wear Shoes On: What to Look For

Yoga mats tear under sneakers. For workouts in shoes, pick a firm, high-density exercise mat about 1/4" thick with grip on both sides. Here's how to tell before you buy.

Short answer: yes, you can work out in shoes on a mat, as long as it's an exercise mat built for it. A regular yoga mat is soft and thin, so sneaker treads tear and shred it. For workouts in shoes, look for a firm, high-density surface about 1/4" (6mm) thick, grip on both sides, and enough size that you never step off the edge.

Key takeaways

  • Yoga mats are for bare feet. Shoes tear them up.
  • For shoes, choose a firm, high-density exercise mat about 1/4" (6mm) thick.
  • Look for grip on both sides so the mat stays put when you pivot.
  • Go big: footwork in shoes covers more floor than a yoga flow.

Why yoga mats don't survive sneakers

Yoga mats are made to be soft and sticky under bare skin. A sneaker sole concentrates your weight on small, hard tread edges, and every pivot, lunge, and jump grinds those edges into the surface. Soft mats dent, tear, and shed little pieces. They also tend to slide and bunch under shoes, which is the last thing you want during a lateral move.

What to look for in a mat for shoes

Feature What you want Why it matters in shoes
Surface Firm and high-density Tread edges don't dig in or tear the top
Thickness About 1/4" (6mm) Cushions jumps without feeling wobbly underfoot
Grip Non-slip top and bottom Shoes don't skid on top; the mat doesn't creep on the floor
Size At least 6' x 4' Steps, lunges, and shuffles land on the mat, not the floor
Intended use Made for shoes Barefoot-only mats usually don't cover shoe damage

How to tell before you buy

  • Read what the mat is for. If the product page says barefoot, believe it. Our Yoga Mats are barefoot only, and shoe damage isn't covered by the warranty.
  • Check the thickness. Very thick, squishy mats (1/2" and up) feel unstable in shoes. Firm and about 1/4" is the sweet spot. More in How Thick Should an Exercise Mat Be?
  • Look for workouts done in shoes. Reviews that mention HIIT, jump rope, kettlebells, or P90X tell you the mat has been tested under sneakers.

“We have used tennis shoes on it and the material does not shred from the tread.”

FAQ

Can you wear shoes on a yoga mat?

You can, but you shouldn't. Shoes tear and shred a soft yoga surface. If you train in shoes, use an exercise mat made for it.

Can I go barefoot on an exercise mat too?

Yes. Our Exercise Mats work with or without shoes, so you can switch from jump rope to floor stretches without changing mats.

Will shoes wear out the exercise mat?

Our Exercise Mats are built for shoes and heavy use. Wipe off grit after workouts so it doesn't get ground into the surface.

What size exercise mat for workouts in shoes?

6' x 4' fits one person in a small room. For jumping and side-to-side moves, 7' x 5' or larger. See What Size Exercise Mat Do You Need?
